Even after a week in the hospital, Pope Francis’ health remains serious. The Vatican has now declared the Pope’s state of health “critical. “The Pope is not out of danger,” it said on Saturday evening.

In the morning, he had suffered an “extensive asthma crisis”. As a result, the head of the Catholic Church had to be administered highly concentrated oxygen.

Francis also received blood transfusions due to anaemia. “The Holy Father continues to be lively and has spent the day in an armchair, although he was worse than yesterday,” the Vatican continued. “At present, the prognosis is guarded.”

The 88-year-old was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday last week with bronchitis. There was later talk of a “complex” clinical picture and a “polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract”.

On Tuesday, the Vatican finally announced that the Pope, who had part of one of his lungs removed at a young age, was suffering from bilateral pneumonia.

The life-threatening illness of the head of the church, who was already in poor health, caused worldwide concern. Prayers for Francis were called for in many places.
